The minutes after a car accident are chaotic — and what you do (or don’t do) can shape your claim for months. Save this checklist so you are never caught unprepared.
At the Scene
- Move to safety and call 911 — always request a police report
- Get medical attention, even if you feel “fine” — adrenaline masks injuries
- Photograph vehicles, license plates, the road, signals, and your injuries
- Exchange insurance and contact information with all drivers
- Collect names and phone numbers of witnesses
- Do not admit fault or speculate about the accident
Within 24–48 Hours
- See a doctor and describe every symptom, however small
- Notify your insurance company — stick to facts only
- Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer
- Save receipts: medical bills, prescriptions, rentals, missed work
- Write down everything you remember while it is fresh
Before You Accept Any Offer
- Never sign a release before understanding your full injuries
- Get a free case evaluation — quick offers are almost always low offers
